Game of Thrones made history tonight by taking home 12 Emmy awards, crushing the eight-win record set by The West Wing in 2000.
For its fifth season, HBO's acclaimed fantasy drama won Outstanding Drama, Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series, Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series, and Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series at this evening's ceremony.
Those are added to the eight trophies Thrones claimed at the Creative Arts Emmys on Sept. 12.: Outstanding Casting for a Drama Series, Outstanding Make-Up for a Single-Camera Series (Non-Prosthetic), Outstanding Single-Camera Picture Editing for a Drama Series, Outstanding Production Design for a Narrative Contemporary or Fantasy Program (One Hour or More), Outstanding Sound Editing for a Series, Outstanding Sound Mixing for a Comedy or Drama Series (One Hour), Outstanding Special Visual Effects, and Outstanding Stunt Coordination for a Drama Series, Limited Series, or Movie.
In 2000, Aaron Sorkin's political drama The West Wing won eight Emmys: Outstanding Art Direction for a Single Camera Series, Outstanding Casting for a Drama Series, Outstanding Cinematography for a Single Camera Series, Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series, Outstanding Main Title Theme Music, Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series, Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series, Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series, and Outstanding Drama Series.
It should be noted that some of the Emmy categories have been redefined since 2000 — and at least one didn't even exist. But with a four-statue buffer, Thrones would still have easily beaten Wing.
